Rubik's Cube notation and keyboard shortcuts

The letter names the face. A suffix tells you the direction or number of turns.

Try every move in 3D

Start the explorer to try face turns, wide turns, middle slice turns and whole-cube rotations. Judge clockwise while looking straight at the face being turned.

Direction and turn count

R turns the right face 90 degrees clockwise as viewed directly from that face.

R' turns it 90 degrees counter-clockwise. R2 turns it 180 degrees in either direction.

Separate moves with spaces or line breaks. Example: R U R' U'

Wide, slice, and whole-cube turns

  • Lowercase r or Rw turns the two layers on the R side; u, d, l, f, and b follow the same rule.
  • M, E, and S turn the middle slices between L/R, U/D, and F/B.
  • x, y, and z reorient the whole cube around the R, U, and F axes.
  • Prime and 2 suffixes work on every extended move, for example r' M2 x.

Two input schemes

Combination

One key per face

Six keys, one for each face (U, D, L, R, F, B). The face key on its own turns that face clockwise.

  • Press the face key for a clockwise quarter turn.
  • Add Shift for a counter-clockwise turn.
  • Add Alt for a 180-degree double turn.

Separated

One key per turn

Every quarter turn has its own dedicated key, so U and U', D and D', and the rest each sit on a separate key.

  • Twelve keys cover every clockwise and counter-clockwise face turn.
  • No modifier is needed; each key already means one exact turn.
  • Best for fast, one-key-per-move input.

Extended keys (both schemes)

  • Wide turns use the lowercase face keys (u d l r f b) to turn two layers at once.
  • Slice keys M, E, and S turn the middle layers; x, y, and z reorient the whole cube.
  • On every extended key, Shift makes a prime turn and Alt makes a double turn.
  • Rebind or clear any extended key from the settings gear.
  • When you play a scramble one move at a time, press Space to apply the next move.
